DON’T FORGET ABOUT POPULATION SIZE AND GROWTH!
The leadership of Negative Population Growth, Inc. (NPG) commends the 40 international representatives who participated in the recent Major Economies Forum (MEF) on Energy and Climate Change. Reducing carbon emissions is crucial to saving our planet from further environmental destruction.
The most effective way to reach this goal, however, was not even mentioned in the entire span of the two-day long conference, also referred to as President Biden’s Leaders’ Summit on Climate. In order to reduce carbon emissions, they must adopt a serious plan to reduce the size and growth of the world’s population. Global population now stands at more than 7.7 billion people, with no end to growth in sight. No amount of reduction in carbon emissions will ever negate the addition of about 80 million new people to the planet every single year.
NPG has said it since our founding in 1972: Nearly every problem the world faces is made worse by adding more people to it. Everything from food shortages to the destruction of fragile plant and animal habitats is made worse as the population grows. It really is the “elephant in the room” – and we owe it to future generations to have an open and honest discussion on this important topic. Please, speak up for the future of our planet.
Call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111 and tell President Biden that his plan to reduce carbon emissions must include a clear goal to reduce population size and growth.
