Alexandria, VA (July 16, 2014) – In response to President Obama’s June 30th vow to take further “administrative action” on immigration reform, Negative Population Growth (NPG) launched a new campaign on July 7th to highlight the need for responsible U.S. population and immigration policies.
NPG President Donald Mann stated: “Conservative Census Bureau projections show that U.S. population, now over 318 million, will reach at least 420 million by 2060 – and we are on track to approach a half-billion people by 2100. Over 80% of our population growth is now due to immigration – legal, illegal, and the American-born children of immigrants.”
Targeting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Mann explained: “the recent surge of illegal entry at America’s southern border, including the influx of unaccompanied alien children, is a direct result of our government’s current equivocal position on immigration. Historically, with every law and executive action granting amnesty – whether implicit or direct – the percentage of U.S. population growth stemming from immigration grew dramatically. Now the President promises to take further unilateral action, which will only worsen the problem.”
In its campaign for a viable solution, during the month of August NPG will release its cornerstone proposal of 10 Principles for a Responsible Population Policy. Mann noted: “anyone interested in drafting responsible immigration legislation must include these principles, which act to slow, halt, and eventually reverse U.S. population growth. The two phenomena are inexorably linked, and both are in critical need of reform if we are to preserve a livable America for future generations.”
He added: “Our nation is already vastly overpopulated. The evidence is all around us: millions are out of work, schools and hospitals are overcrowded, our natural resources are dwindling, pollution is increasing, and our infrastructure and social services are crumbling under the strain. Yet U.S. population is still growing by an average of over 6,600 people per day, and nearly 2.5 million people per year. We simply cannot afford to continue our growth. It is unsustainable, and irresponsible policies are the driving force behind it.”
Mann concluded: “Ultimately, the purpose of this campaign is to engage the power of American public opinion. With political deadlock on the proposed expansionist immigration reforms, concerned citizens must act now. We must contact our leaders and demand they enact an official U.S. population policy which includes these 10 principles. NPG’s campaign was designed to reach Americans from coast to coast, and ask them to join us in working towards the solution: a smaller, truly sustainable population.”
Founded in 1972, NPG is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to educating the American public and political leaders regarding the damaging effects of population growth. We believe that our nation is already vastly overpopulated in terms of the long-range carrying capacity of its resources and environment. NPG advocates the adoption of its Proposed National Population Policy, with the goal of eventually stabilizing U.S. population at a sustainable level – far lower than today’s. We do not simply identify the problems – we propose solutions. For more information, visit our website at www.NPG.org.
