Newspapers regularly publish articles on topics directly related to population growth: the environment, natural resources, infrastructure, immigration, alternative/renewable energy sources, global warming and weather patterns, urban development and suburban sprawl, overcrowding, and the overall quality of American life. After reading these stories, many of our members have asked for advice on writing a Letter to the Editor to make it clear that population growth is the root cause of so many of our nation’s problems.

Below are several sample letters to help convey the critical need to halt and reverse U.S. population growth – we encourage you to edit the language to fit each specific situation appropriately. Please let us know if your letter is published!

Sample Letter to your Senator – Migrants/Illegal Immigration

Dear Senator ___________,

Illegal immigration is quickly destroying our nation. The weaknesses in border security over the last two years have allowed more than 7 million illegal aliens to enter the United States. To make matters worse, the Biden Administration is more interested in helping them remain in the nation than in securing the border to stop the flood of more and more people.

In addition to refusing to enforce the laws already on the books, they are intentionally creating special programs to make illegal entry easier! As Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) said regarding the new CBP1 app, “It’s like a concierge service for illegal immigrants.”

The United States is already vastly overpopulated and many families struggle to keep up in today’s volatile economic climate. Adding millions of additional people who need to be fed, clothed, housed, educated, employed, and cared for cannot possibly help the average American.

The House recently passed H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023 and I hope it will soon come to the Senate for a vote. Please remember what is best for the average American and vote to PASS H.R.2.

Immigration, and the American-born children of immigrants, account for nearly all U.S. population growth. With more than 334 million people, the United States simply needs a break from immigration. Negative Population Growth, Inc. calls for an end to illegal immigration, achieved by enforcing all laws to deter illegal entry and residency. NPG also recommends a cap on legal immigration of no more than 200,000 per year, including all refugees and asylees.

Senator ___________, please do what is best for our children, our grandchildren, and all future generations of Americans. Show you support America’s struggling families by voting in favor of
H.R.2.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to your Senators or Congressman on Immigration Voting

Dear Senator/Congressman (Last Name):

As Congress confronts America’s immigration debate in the coming days, I urge you to play a critical role in resolving the current immigration crisis that is so threatening to our nation’s future.

Most importantly, I urge you to put our nation’s best interests ahead of political interests and:

  • VOTE YES on a reasonable and workable solution to the problem of young people presently covered under the DACA program;
  • VOTE YES to end current ‘chain migration’ policies that will limit new citizens to sponsoring only a spouse and minor children.  [This change alone could cut annual U.S. population growth by 350,000.];
  • VOTE YES to mandate E-Verify for all employee hiring;
  • VOTE YES to further strengthen our nation’s borders;
  • VOTE YES to strongly penalize those who overstay their worker, student and tourist visas and remain in our country illegally;
  • VOTE YES to end the present Visa Lottery;
  • VOTE YES to limit birthright citizenship to children born on American soil only to U.S. citizens and legal resident aliens;
  • VOTE YES to place and firmly enforce an annual cap on the number of refugees admitted; and
  • VOTE YES to permanently cap the overall yearly number of admissions of legal immigrants at a number significantly lower than the present volume of entries.

As an active member of Negative Population Growth I sincerely hope that you will listen to the majority of the American people on this issue. Stand firm and represent our national interest – do not cave in to the demands of open-border advocates, the cheap labor lobby, or special interest groups who work to undermine decisive immigration legislation.

Without Congress taking strong steps to rectify the current immigration problems we face, you will only put our nation on a path to future population, economic, environmental, resource, and security disasters.

I look forward to your positive vote on strong, effective immigration and population policies.

Sincerely,

Stand firm and represent our national interest – do not cave in to the demands of open-border advocates, the cheap labor lobby, or special interest groups who work to undermine decisive immigration legislation.

As an active member of Negative Population Growth I sincerely hope that you will advocate legislation containing: deportation for any illegal immigrant in our country, mandatory E-Verify for all employers and heavy penalties for knowingly hiring illegal workers, firm border controls, and strict limits on new legal immigration numbers.

Without Congress taking strong steps to rectify the current immigration problems we face, you will only put our nation on a path to future population, economic, environmental, resource, and security disasters.

I look forward to your positive vote on strong, effective immigration and population policies.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to your Governor

Dear Governor (Last Name):

As (state name) struggles to balance an ever-growing budget and you fight to bring jobs and prosperity back, it is important you recognize how many of our current problems can be directly tied to a lack of responsible population policies.

Trying to accommodate population growth and illegal immigration has led to a funding crisis when it comes to our basic infrastructure of roads, schools, hospitals, social services, and environmental protection. The solution is not more dollars – it is reducing our population to a reasonable, sustainable level. I urge you to advance policies that reflect this sound logic and ensure a better future for all of us in (state name).

In addition to helping halt and reverse our population growth, I also hope you will stand firm and demand that Congress enact decisive legislation that addresses our nation’s out-of-control immigration problem. Our valuable tax dollars must be available for the hard-working legal citizens who paid them, not used to provide services for those who broke the law to arrive and remain here illegally.

We are all proud to call (State name) “home”. However, bigger is not always better. By addressing our population problems today, you can help us create a healthy and secure quality of life for our nation, (state name) and its people for generations to come. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to your Local Official

Dear Mayor/County Commissioner/City Council Member (Last Name):

As a proud citizen of (county/city/town name), I cherish the quality of life we enjoy and feel strongly that we must protect it for future generations. To do so, we must first address our current challenges that are direct effects of population growth.

Today in (county/city/town name), we live with gridlocked roads, overcrowded schools, depletion of our natural resources, destruction of our environment, overburdened hospitals and social service programs, and taxes that are spiraling out of control. The last thing we need is more development, more houses, and more people!

The evidence is all around us – we are in dire need of realistic population policies to navigate these problems and protect the quality of life in (county/city/town name) and its surrounding communities. Urban sprawl is not inevitable. It can be stopped! I know I speak for a majority of voters who demand we put the needs of our residents first, not those of wealthy developers or special interest groups.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to the Editor – Overpopulation

To the Editor:

The Census Bureau estimates the November 22, 2021 U.S. population was  332,946,491 people. That number is projected to reach 400 million by 2060 – less than 40 years. Does anyone else think that we just have too many people? The evidence is all around us. Congestion on our roads brings traffic to a standstill. Rolling hills and green open space have been replaced with massive housing developments and strip malls. State and local infrastructures are so overburdened that residents must pay higher taxes for reduced services.

It seems no one is making the connection – many everyday problems we’re facing in America could be greatly alleviated by reducing our population to a smaller, truly sustainable level. Overcrowded schools, pollution, deteriorating roadways, depleted natural resources, and competition for jobs are just a few commonplace effects of overpopulation. Yet neither the media nor our elected officials are addressing this critical issue.

It’s time that we speak up about the dangers of unchecked population growth: bigger is not always better.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to the Editor – Immigration

To the Editor:

As we confront America’s immigration debate, I have been deeply disappointed to see such inaction on behalf of our elected officials. It seems that, in the interest of votes and political correctness, legislators are refusing to establish or enforce reasonable immigration policies for our country. In the absence of leadership, American citizens are having to once again step up to the plate and shoulder the financial, environmental, and social burdens created by millions of DREAMers and other immigrants.

The questions of diversity, ethnicity, and racism are not the actual issues at hand. America is a nation founded on the ideals of equality and multiculturalism. However, it is also a nation of laws – a nation where all have equal opportunity, provided they are legal citizens who contribute with their tax dollars in order to participate in all the freedoms the U.S. has to offer. It is also a nation already overwhelmed by too many people, unable to accommodate the sheer volume of our existing population. This means we must address our current policies on legal immigration and net migration.

The vast majority of population growth in the U.S. is a result of immigration. To protect our current quality of life, we must reduce immigration levels. This is not the time to let the open-border advocates, cheap labor lobby, or special interest groups determine the course of our future. We have serious problems, and we must take definitive action. The present state of our nation requires legislation containing: deportation for any illegal immigrant in our country, mandatory E-Verify for all employers and heavy penalties for knowingly hiring illegal workers, strengthened border controls, and strict limits on new legal immigration numbers.

Until we reduce our population to a sustainable level, the emotional debates encircling immigration are moot. We must unite in the spirit of simple facts – our national and state budgets cannot accommodate even basic infrastructure, our natural resources are depleted to the point of critical shortages, and our environment is being demolished before our eyes. Continuing on our current path will prove disastrous to future generations of Americans.

More citizens must speak out and demand Congress shape strong, fair immigration policy that puts our national interest first. No one can afford to sit on the sidelines on this issue.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter to the Editor – Amnesty

To the Editor:

Break the law, and you will be rewarded. That is not the American Way I was raised with.

This is hypocrisy at its worst. The simple facts are that illegal immigration threatens our security, drains our resources, and increases the size of our already unsustainable population. We cannot afford to allow lawbreakers to “Pass Go, Collect Free Citizenship”. And what of the welcome mat this provides to millions of others who may consider illegally crossing our borders, or remaining beyond the expiration of a student, tourist or work visa? Our actions demonstrate that, if they wait long enough, they will reap the rewards of blanket amnesty.

We must make it clear to our government officials that we do not support granting amnesty to these millions of illegal immigrants. We must demand they put the interests of American citizens first – not those of open-border advocates, the cheap labor lobby, or special interest groups.

Sincerely,
