NPG is committed to fostering public awareness and informed discussions about the critical challenges posed by climate change. The work undertaken by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication provides valuable insights into the perspectives held by the American public regarding this global crisis. Their latest Climate Opinion Maps offer comprehensive data on public understanding, attitudes, and beliefs about climate change at the national, state, and local levels.

The maps address questions, such as:

Global warming is caused mostly by human activities. Assuming global warming is happening, do you think it is…?

    • Caused mostly by human activities
    • Caused mostly by natural changes in the environment
    • None of the above because global warming isn’t happening
    • Other
    • Don’t know

Global warming will harm future generations. How much do you think global warming will harm future generations of people?

    • Not at all
    • Only a little
    • A moderate amount
    • A great deal
    • Don’t know

The survey results serve as a crucial resource for informing public dialogue and shaping effective policy initiatives. They highlight the diverse views among the population, enabling leaders, advocates, and researchers to better address misconceptions and promote actionable solutions to mitigate climate impacts.

The interplay between population growth and climate change is undeniable. Each additional person contributes to the global carbon footprint through increased energy use, land transformation, and resource demands. These pressures exacerbate environmental challenges, particularly in vulnerable regions, by intensifying issues such as deforestation, habitat loss, and resource scarcity.

We encourage everyone to utilize this important tool to advance evidence-based discussions and policies that safeguard the future of our planet.
