Leveraging Demographic Change with Foresight and Balance
The Washington, DC metropolitan area is experiencing notable demographic changes fueled by immigration and aging trends. Recent analysis from WTOP highlights that immigration is the primary force behind the region’s population growth. Michael Bader from Johns Hopkins University and Hamilton Lombard from the University of Virginia emphasize that without immigration, the region’s population trajectory would be negative.
The WTOP series also reveals a trend of aging populations outpacing younger generations, creating a challenge to meet the demand for a robust working-age population. This shift is characterized as a “war for talent,” as the influx of residents over 65 surpasses those under 18.
In 2025, NPG writer Nathanial Gronewold explored these issues by analyzing the impacts of federal immigration policies and proposing sustainable paths forward. In his most recent work, Gronewold critiques current and past administrations’ immigration strategies, advocating for a more balanced approach by stating: Biden’s immigration system was a mess; Trump’s is no better, and neither path will bring us closer to a saner policy approach.
In Embracing the Birth Dearth: Part 2 The Right Stuff, Gronewold outlines the potential benefits of adopting pro-aging policies and provides a thoughtful analysis of how these approaches can be leveraged to address demographic shifts.
The WTOP series provides a compelling exploration of demographic trends, population growth, and their far-reaching implications for society. Gronewold’s work complements these insights by examining the necessity of balanced immigration policies and advocating for pro-aging strategies as viable solutions to demographic challenges. His analysis underscores the importance of addressing these issues with foresight and pragmatism, as highlighted in his critiques of past administrations and his advocacy for leveraging demographic shifts positively.
At NPG, we firmly believe that it is essential to work collectively to slow, halt, and ultimately reverse population growth in the United States to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. To explore more population-related topics, please click here.
