Several State Governors Now Taking ActionÂ
West Virginia rarely makes the headlines regarding immigration and population trends. It has one of the smallest illegal alien populations of all 50 states. According to official Census counts it was also one of only three states to lose population between 2010 and 2020, (WV lost 59,278 people; Illinois decreased by 18,124; and Mississippi dropped by 6,018).
On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Governor Justice announced that WV National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will be sent to Texas in August to assist the Texas National Guard as they continue their efforts to secure the border. The units from West Virginia will be entirely volunteer based.
Justice backed his decision by stating: “…the situation on our Southern Border is terrible.”
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster have also recently agreed to send support, joining a growing list of states willing to step in to help where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seem to be failing.
Governor Youngkin expressed his growing frustration with the federal government when he said: “The ongoing border crisis facing our nation has turned every state into a border state… As leadership solutions at the federal level fall short, states are answering the call to secure our southern border…”
