A Snapshot of Foreign-Born Demographic Patterns

America’s Changing Foreign-Born Demographics

The United States Census Bureau recently released a report titled “The Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2022,” highlighting the significant growth and changing face of America’s foreign-born population since 1970. Today, 13.9% of the U.S. population, or 46.2 million people, were born in another country. This shift reflects how immigration has become a key component of the nation’s population growth. From the rise in people coming from Asia and Africa to increases in naturalization and education, this report paints a comprehensive picture of America’s evolving demographics. But with this growth comes challenges, such as the strain on resources and infrastructure, and the need for sustainable policies to ensure future generations can thrive.

Key Highlights:

Growth: From 9.6 million in 1970 to 46.2 million in 2022, the foreign-born population now constitutes 13.9% of the total U.S. population.

Geographic Distribution: Nearly a quarter of the foreign-born population resides in California, with substantial populations in Texas, Florida, and New York. Notably, New York dropped from the second to the fourth largest foreign-born population state.

Demographic Shifts: There’s been a noticeable demographic shift with more individuals hailing from Asia and Africa, alongside increases in naturalization rates and educational attainment.

Who is Foreign-born?

This comprises individuals not born as U.S. citizens, including naturalized citizens, lawful permanent residents, temporary migrants, humanitarian migrants, and unauthorized migrants.

What Can You Do?

Your support has never been more vital as we continue to champion the cause of negative population growth. Now, we invite you to deepen your engagement:

Donate: Your generous contributions enable us to keep pushing for meaningful change.

The data provided in the Census Bureau’s report reminds us of the many demographic challenges our nation faces. Our understanding of the sources of population growth is crucial as we advocate for policies to ultimately achieve a smaller, truly sustainable U.S. population to best protect our communities and conserve our natural resources. NPG welcomes a continuation of recent declines in birthrates; we strongly encourage an end to illegal immigration; and, we recommend a limit of no more than 200,000 legal immigrants per year. These forces, when combined over the course of several generations, will allow our nation to slow, halt, and eventually reverse population growth.

Additionally, we encourage you to read more about population issues (by clicking here) and stay informed about how these trends affect our collective future.

Your continued commitment and advocacy are invaluable to our mission.

Donations to NPG allow us to advocate for these necessary changes.
