2013 NPG Member Questionnaire
Each year, NPG invites our full membership to participate in our annual Member Questionnaire project. Members are asked to answer a series of questions related to population growth and immigration issues. The results we receive, compiled from the responses of NPG members all across America, allow us to ensure that our programs and projects reflect your priorities. We thank everyone who returned this year’s survey – your help allows us to better shape our agenda for the year ahead! The results of this year’s Questionnaire are tabulated below.
1. The Obama Administration holds that since it is impossible to deport the 11-12 million illegal immigrants now living in the U.S., Congress must pass a new, all-inclusive immigration reform bill as the solution to our nation’s immigration problem. NPG contends that strengthening and actively enforcing existing immigration laws would make it difficult for illegal immigrants to earn substantial income or settle here permanently, leaving them no option but to return voluntarily to their native country. Do you believe this is a viable option?
Yes – 81% No – 11% No Opinion – 8%
2. The White House is pressuring the 113th Congress to consider only one major immigration bill. Many members of Congress think the issue is far too complex to address in a single piece of legislation and that the nation would be better served with separate bills. Each bill could then address individual issues, such as: border security, guest workers, chain migration, anchor babies, limits on legal immigration, etc. This would allow each of these important topics to receive proper attention in committee and in Congressional debate. Which legislative path do you personally support?
One Comprehensive Bill – 8% Individual Bills – 81% No Opinion – 11%
3. NPG has criticized the Department of Homeland Security – and especially the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency – for lax enforcement of current immigration laws. Do you believe DHS and ICE are adequately protecting America with its present policies related to illegals?
Yes – 1% No – 94% No Opinion – 5%
4. How would you assess the problem of illegal immigrants in your home state of XStateX? (These were pretty even on the surveys tallied. Maybe something like “A majority of people polled agree that…”)
Check all that apply:
Illegal immigrants are putting a major strain on my state’s finances and are costing us too much money – 81%
Illegal immigrants are taking valuable jobs from state residents – 66%
Illegal immigrants are contributing to overcrowded classrooms and hospitals – 85%
N/A – 4%
5. The American Society of Civil Engineers recently gave our nation’s infrastructure a D+ grade noting that our highways and bridges, water and sewer systems, and electrical grids face severely deteriorating conditions. With the U.S. Census predicting a population of 400 million people by mid-century, how concerned are you that our nation’s infrastructure will be able to accommodate an increase of more than 85 million more people?
Very Concerned – 88% Somewhat Concerned – 9%
Not Concerned – 1% No Opinion – 2%
6. NPG feels that Congress should pass legislation that automatically cuts federal funding to any U.S. city, county, or other government jurisdiction, which declares itself a “sanctuary” for illegal immigrants and won’t enforce laws against them? Do you agree?
Yes – 91% No – 6% No Opinion – 3%
7. As efforts for immigration reform have moved forward, there are rising demands that secure borders must be part of any resolution of this issue. DHS holds that it alone should make the assessment as to whether our nation’s borders are secure. Others contend that border security must be verified by an independent group. What is your opinion on this issue?
We should trust DHS to make the decision – 5%
We must have an independent group’s assessment – 83%
No Opinion – 12%
8. In your opinion, is the national media too biased in its reporting on illegal immigrants, presenting a favorable spin that immigrants be allowed to stay in the U.S. and gain access to as many benefits as possible – including the right to citizenship and to vote?
Yes – 84% No – 10% No Opinion – 6%
9. NPG has worked very hard to make sure that an amnesty/citizenship provision is not part of the final immigration reform legislation. However, if Congress does accede to the demands of the pro-amnesty forces, how much time do you believe should elapse before current illegals would gain full citizenship rights –including the right to vote?
5-7 Years – 8% 7-9 Years – 10% 9-11 Years – 15%
11-15 Years – 30% No Opinion – 31% N/A – 6%
10. Do you feel that your U.S. Senators and Representative are responsive to your concerns when you contact them on immigration-driven population growth issues?
Yes – 9% No – 56% No Opinion – 35%
11. Last year, President Obama issued an Executive Order to enact a version of the DREAM Act when Congress would not pass it. If Congress strikes down a major immigration bill this year, how concerned are you that the president will again try to meet his goal for amnesty via Executive Order?
Very Concerned – 86% Somewhat Concerned – 10%
Not Concerned – 1% No Opinion – 3%
12. More pregnant foreign women are flying into the U.S. specifically to give birth so that their anchor baby” will be a U.S. citizen. It is estimated that as many as 300,000 anchor babies are born each year posing a huge threat to future U.S. population growth. NPG is demanding that current automatic birthright citizenship policies should be changed to stop this abuse. Do you agree?
Yes – 99% No – 0% No Opinion – 1%
13. Under current U.S. immigration laws, a new citizen or permanent resident can bring members of his/her extended family to live in the U.S. through current chain migration” policies which are being severely abused and are greatly contributing to our nation’s population growth. NPG is backing legislation in Congress that would severely limit the people covered under this provision to immediate nuclear family” members. Do you endorse this action?
Yes – 95% No – 2% No Opinion – 3%
14. National opinion polls are all over the map on population and immigration issues depending on how the questions are asked. While it is costly, NPG periodically contracts with a reliable and established polling agency to get a true reading on citizen sentiment. Do you think NPG should fund its own national poll in 2013?
Yes – 58% No – 5% No Opinion – 37%
15. Do you feel that the U.S. Justice Department is right or wrong in filing suit against states that pass legislation designed to limit benefits and activities of illegal immigrants?
