National headlines this summer screamed of record high temperatures in dozens of states and massive areas of the United States are still suffering from some form of drought. In July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced the U.S. had “its warmest year-to-date and warmest 12-month period on record.”
While many misguided people continue to dismiss global warming as nonsense, they shouldn’t dismiss reality. Nor should they reject that increased population and economic activity only feed climate change.
If the summer of 2012, with America’s population at 313 million and world population at 7 billion, produces such extreme weather, what can we expect in just 40 years when the U.S. may see a population of 438 million people – and close to 9 billion people inhabit our globe?
Never has it been more important to educate our fellow citizens about the crisis of climate change and the solutions that can help abate it. We must aggressively challenge those who dismiss our point of view and label us as “alarmists.” More importantly, we must continue to put pressure on our elected leaders to understand that failure to halt and eventually reverse population growth will have calamitous results for our entire ecosystem.
We can no longer let our nation’s elected leaders ignore the disastrous impact that population growth has on our climate and environment. In failing to confront these critical issues, future generations will be subject to extreme temperatures, drought, and widespread destruction. Do we really want to subject our children and grandchildren to such a ruinous environmental future?
The majority of Americans signed on to be responsible stewards of our planet over 40 years ago at the first Earth Day celebrations. This is not the time to back away from our duty to see that pledge through.
This year, NPG is celebrating its 40th Anniversary. We are proud to help lead the way in leaving future generations with a livable earth. Please visit https://hen.ywb.mybluehost.me to join us.
POPULATION AND GLOBAL WARMING ARE INEXORABLY LINKED IN THEIR GLOBAL IMPACT. THE SOLUTION LIES IN REDUCING BOTH!
