JOIN THE WAR ON VISA OVERSTAYS:
THE LARGEST SOURCE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
If America is going to win the war on illegal immigration, it must forcefully and realistically confront the critical issue of people entering our country legally but not leaving. USA TODAY recently reported that nearly 500,000 foreigners overstayed their visas in 2015.
That’s not acceptable!
While it is a common misconception that the bulk of illegal immigrants sneak into our country, a huge percentage arrive legally and simply stay in America to share in all of its rewards. It is time to shine a spotlight on the failure of our government to fix this underreported component of the growth of our nation’s illegal immigrant population.
By cracking down on visa overstays, our government can send an important signal
that America is getting serious about stopping illegal immigration.
Presently, few of the individuals who enter our nation via a business, travel or student visa – using it to gain a foothold for permanent residency – get caught and deported. Just recently, the highly-respected Heritage Foundation noted that “In 2014, about 4.5 million U.S. residents, or 42% of the population of roughly 11 million illegal immigrants, had overstayed their welcome.”
A state-of-the-art biometric system for tracking visa entries and exits has been in the planning stages for years. Sadly, foot-dragging on the part of the Department of Homeland Security has delayed its large-scale implementation. However, President Trump has recently ordered the expedited completion of a Biometric Entry-Exit Tracking System.
Holding both the administration’s and Congress’ feet to the fire to bring forth responsible solutions to enforcing our immigration laws is at the heart of NPG’s quest to slow, halt and eventually reverse population growth. Today, as we continue to carry on our valuable research, expand our educational programs that reach into America’s schools, and promote increased citizen activism, we invite you to join us.
